For many years emulsion polymers have been applied successfully in a variety of applications in which the presence of mineral oils, heavy aromatic naphthas, surfactants, and emulsifiers was not a problem for the objective of the polymer application. These non-acrylamide ingredients didn’t presumably adversely affect plant operations. Some years ago the paper industry wanted to practice more responsible environmental stewardship and reduce VOC’s emitted from the paper machines during the drying portion of the process. Hence, the pulp and paper makes looked at the oils and surfactants as part of the VOC emission problem and wondered if it were possible to make a liquid polyacrylamide polymer without the undesirable VOC’s. Now, there is technology to meet this demand.

Tramfloc® 200 to 300 series oil less or oil free polymers are specially formulated, very high activity level, cationic polyacrylamides in water dispersion of high molecular weights and various cationicites. Tramfloc® 200 to 300 series oil less or oil free polymers are very environmentally friendly as they do not contain, solvents, oils, surfactants or other undesirable compounds. These formulations are completely water soluble. Tramfloc® 200 to 300 series oil less or oil free polymers are extremely stable and do not experience phase separation as emulsions do. Tramfloc® 200 to 300 series oil less or oil free polymers are used as flocculants and dewatering agents in a variety of industrial, mining, paper making and municipal operations. Tramfloc® 200 to 300 series oil less or oil free polymers avoid objectionable airborne dust particle problems associated with powder polymers. Making oil less or oil free polymers requires a much lower carbon footprint than emulsion manufacturing in keeping with responsible environmental stewardship.

Tramfloc® 200 to 300 series oil less or oil free polymers are water dispersions of polymer. With the advent of the biodiesel, algae production, ethanol fermentation, all-natural-food and other green industries, there has been a significantly increased demand for liquid polymers without any petroleum based oils and surfactants. Tramfloc® 200 to 300 series oil less or oil free polymers meet this requirement of these industries of the future.

Specific Benefits, Paper Machine Application

Although Tramfloc® 200-300 series of cationic oil less or oil free polymers are used in many diverse industrial, food and chemical industries, an important and specific application is on paper machines. Tramfloc® 200-300 series of cationic oil less or oil free polymers improve the drainage on the paper machine. The oil less or oil free polymer enhances the paper drying, reducing the steam requirement. Tramfloc® 200-300 series of cationic oil less or oil free polymers increase fiber retention and the brightness intensity.

Tramfloc® 200-300 series of cationic oil less or oil free polymers allow increased machine speed and production efficiency on tissue, light and heavy liner board grades. The oil less or oil free polymers improve the sheet formation and increases the mechanical properties of the dried paper (strengthening agent). Tramfloc® 200-300 series of cationic oil less or oil free polymers are surfactant and organic solvent free, with a very low content of volatile organic compounds (VOC). This product ‘s manufacturing process utilizes the most advanced technology in terms of environmental stewardship.

Preparation and Dosage

In most of cases this product must be dissolved in water prior its use in the application. Its dissolution is very rapid. For an effective and rapid dissolution process it is important to get a good first contact between product and water. We recommend pouring the product slowly over strongly agitated water. A little spurt of product should contact water on the vortex formed by the agitation. Strong agitation conditions must be maintained until all the product has been fed to the water, after that, the agitation rate may be reduced until the solution is completely homogeneous.
Solution stability depends on diverse factors: quality of the dilution water (hardness, conductivity, and pH), temperature, concentration, etc. Because the product can be solubilized so easily, in some specific cases, it may be dosed to the application neat, without mixing.

Economics/Cost Effectiveness

Our oil-less polymers are more cost effective than standard mineral oil based emulsions and are available in drums, IBC’s, tank trucks and rail cars. Please contact our sales department at water@tramfloc.com for further information about samples, quotations and delivery to your locations.
